ROLE OF EDUCATION IN PRESERVING TRIBAL KNOWLEDGE

The preservation of tribal knowledge in India is a critical aspect of maintaining culturaldiversity, ecological sustainability, and social equity. Tribal communities, often marginalized, possess a wealth of indigenous knowledge systems encompassing traditional medicine, sustainable agricultural practices, natural resource management, and cultural heritage. However, rapid modernization, globalization, and inadequate policy frameworks have led to theerosion of this invaluable knowledge. Education, both formal and informal, plays a pivotal rolein preserving and revitalizing tribal knowledge systems. This paper explores the dual role ofeducation in safeguarding tribal knowledge: firstly, by integrating indigenous knowledge intomainstream curricula to foster respect and understanding among non-tribal populations, andsecondly, by empowering tribal communities through culturally responsive education thatvalidates and perpetuates their traditional wisdom. The paper also examines challenges such aslanguage barriers, lack of infrastructure, and the need for community-led educational initiatives.By highlighting successful case studies and proposing policy recommendations, this presentationunderscores the importance of education as a tool for preserving tribal knowledge, ensuring itstransmission to future generations, and promoting inclusive development in India.
