A Proposed Analysis and Design of a Two-Storey Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) Residential Building Using Direct Strength Method

This study focused on the analysis and design of a two-storey cold-formed steel (CFS) residentialbuilding using the Direct Strength Method. The primary objective was to address the utilization of a lesscommon building material for construction. The study aimed to determine whether cold-formed steel couldserve as a viable, sustainable option for building residential housing, given its potential advantages. UtilizingSTAAD Pro Connect, a comprehensive design software, the study developed a safe and sustainable buildingmodel capable of withstanding various loadings. The software facilitated the structural analysis and design, ensuring the building met safety and durability requirements under Australian Standards. The results of theanalysis demonstrated the feasibility of constructing a residential building using cold-formed steel, highlighting its robustness and longevity. One of the key findings of the study was the significant benefits of cold-formed steel structures. These benefits included enhanced durability, making CFS an ideal material for residential buildings subjectto diverse environmental factors. The structural design proposed in this study underscored the reliability andefficiency of CFS buildings. The study’s significance extends beyond its immediate application, offeringfuture researchers valuable insights into sustainable and efficient building construction methods. Byillustrating that cold-formed steel can be effectively used as a construction material, the research opens thedoor to innovative ideas in the realm of fast and smart construction practices. This could revolutionize theapproach to building accommodations and other residential structures, emphasizing sustainability, resilience, and cost-effectiveness.
