Atlas Catalão 1375, Tábua 2: textos e lunário / 1375 Catalan Atlas, Plate 2: Texts and Lunarium
These pages present the texts and an analysis of Plate 2 of the Mappa mundi of 1375, currently catalogued in the National Library of Paris as ‘Espagnol 30’, known as the Catalan Atlas of 1375, attributed to Cresques Abraham and his son Jehuda Cresques, from a Jewish family who had a cartography workshop on the island of Mallorca, in the kingdom of Aragon. The first two plates of the Atlas are dedicated to cosmographic, astronomical, astrological and geographical knowledge for use by pilots and sailors. An almost complete transcription and translation of the texts of all the plates has already been carried out by various authors. Here we complete Plate 2 with the reading of the annual calendar inscribed on the central circumferences, including the astronomical lunarium for 19 years. Particularly noteworthy is the inscription of the twenty-eight lunar mansions of the Arab tradition.
