Evaluation of the memTUI Device, a Digital Memory Support for People with Dementia

memTUI is a digital memory support device designed for people with dementia that utilizes a tangible user interface. The device incorporates tangible objects that can be linked to multimedia content to support psychosocial interventions like reminiscence therapy and music therapy. We conducted a formative evaluation with caregivers to assess the device's usability and potential for integration into dementia care settings. Results indicate that caregivers found the system very useful but noted it is not a complete replacement for existing services. Key concerns included the technical knowledge required for content creation, cost considerations for care facilities, and data protection of personal content. Caregivers suggested improvements including displaying song lyrics, providing content previews, and adding remote control functionality. The evaluation revealed that both pre-compiled and self-created content options would be valuable for different use cases. This research contributes to the development of accessible assistive technologies for dementia care through tangible interaction paradigms.
