Nickel-Enhanced Nitrogen Nanofoam Serpentinization

This preprint presents the development and laboratory validation of a Nickel-Enhanced Nitrogen Nanofoam (Ni–N₂ Nanofoam) system for dual geothermal energy recovery and catalytic subsurface hydrogen production. The material integrates nickel nanoparticles, aluminum oxide, and silica within a nitrogen matrix to simultaneously achieve fracture stabilization, enhanced thermal conductivity, and accelerated serpentinization reactions in ultramafic-hosted reservoirs. Experimental results demonstrate a six-fold increase in hydrogen yield, a fifty-fold improvement in thermal conductivity compared to conventional fluids, and over 90% fracture stability retention under geothermal conditions. The study establishes a new benchmark for integrated clean energy systems, uniting geothermal baseload generation with geological hydrogen production in a single engineered platform.
