Industrial Automation and Digital Transformation: Practical Pathways to Industry 4.0 for Small Manufacturers

This article provides a technical and practical overview of Industry 4.0 implementation for small and medium-sized manufacturers (SMEs), focusing on real-world strategies that align with limited budgets and infrastructure. Drawing from over two decades of professional experience, the author discusses the core technologies behind the Fourth Industrial Revolution—including IoT, cyber-physical systems, cloud computing, and AI—and how they can be gradually applied in smaller-scale factories. Special attention is given to affordable tools such as PLCs, wireless sensors, and mobile apps for process monitoring and thermal calculations, like EloControl. The article highlights common challenges faced by SMEs in Brazil and similar industrial markets, offering solutions that combine automation, digital transformation, and workforce training. Safety standards such as OSHA, NR-12, and IEC norms are also discussed to ensure secure system integration. This publication aims to support SME leaders, technicians, and engineers in navigating the path toward smart manufacturing in a sustainable, scalable, and practical way.
