Strategic Role of Human Resource Management in Advancing Sustainable Development Goals in the Retail Sector
Abstract: Human Resource Management (HRM) is increasingly recognized as a strategic driver of sustainability, particularly in the fast-paced and resource-intensive retail sector. As retailers confront global challenges such as climate change, inclusive growth, and efficient resource management, HRM plays a pivotal role in aligning people strategies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This literature review synthesizes insights from recent peer-reviewed studies to explore how HRM practices—such as Green HRM, employee engagement, digitalization, and inclusive organizational culture—enhance Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and facilitate SDG advancement. The review also identifies key research gaps and proposes strategic directions for developing a sustainability-oriented workforce within the retail industry.
