THE NIGERIAN MARINE AND MARITIME CONTRIBUTION TO BRITISH COLONIAL ECONOMY, 1900-1960.

This paper examines the significant, yet often overlooked, contribution of Nigeria's marine and maritime sectors to the British colonial economy between 1900 and 1960. It challenges the prevailing narrative that focuses primarily on agricultural exports, by demonstrating the crucial role played by Nigerian ports, shipping, and related industries in facilitating the extraction and transportation of resources, supporting colonial administration, and generating revenue for the British Empire. Through analysis of archival records, trade statistics, and colonial reports, the study reveals the complex interplay between colonial policy, infrastructure development, and the growth of Nigeria's maritime sector. The findings highlight the economic exploitation inherent in the colonial system, while also acknowledging the agency of Nigerian actors within the constraints imposed by colonial rule. The paper contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the complexities of colonial economic relations and the lasting legacy of British imperialism on Nigeria's maritime industry
