Integrating Indigenous and Formal Justice Systems in Moyale District: An Ownviewist Perspective
This paper examines the integration of traditional dispute resolution mechanisms (TDRMs) with the formal justice system in Moyale District, Ethiopia, using an Ownviewist perspective to understand local perceptions and cultural dynamics. Key informant interviews (KIIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) reveal both challenges and opportunities in harmonizing formal and customary legal systems. Findings highlight the importance of cultural norms, power balances, and participatory approaches in enhancing legitimacy, trust, and access to justice. The paper concludes with recommendations for policy reform, capacity building, codification of indigenous laws, and pilot collaborations to promote an inclusive, pluralistic justice system that respects local customs while safeguarding individual rights
