Kinesiology and Voice: Part I—Exercise Principles, Research, and the Performing Arts Athlete
Abstract: As research in voice science has evolved, the understanding of voice physiology has been refined. Exercise physiology and motor learning principles have informed the application of these principles in habilitative and rehabilitative settings. This paper will review kinesiology research, highlighting similarities between singers, dancers, and athletes. A review of research in vocology fields will provide insights into current views of the generalizability of kinesiology research into voice training. A follow-up paper explores similarities and differences between athletes and vocal athletes, emphasizing the practical application of kinesiology principles in a holistic, singer-centered approach.
