Postcolonial Theory and Literary Practice: Historic Roots, Theoretical Insights, and Future Directions

This study offers a comprehensive examination of postcolonial theory, tracing its emergence from the political and intellectual currents of decolonization to its contemporary applications in global literary studies. It explores the historical trajectory of the field, elucidating foundational concepts such as Orientalism, hybridity, mimicry, ambivalence, subalternity, and the politics of language. Drawing on representative literary works—including Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Rohinton Mistry’s Such a Long Journey, and J. M. Coetzee’s Foe—the paper demonstrates how postcolonial frameworks are enacted in narrative form to interrogate colonial legacies, contest cultural hierarchies, and recover marginalized voices. Special attention is given to the intersections of gender and postcoloniality, highlighting how women’s bodies and voices have been sites of both oppression and resistance in historical and literary contexts. The discussion extends to contemporary concerns, including globalization, digital colonialism, diaspora identities, and environmental justice, positioning postcolonial theory as a living framework adaptable to evolving geopolitical and cultural conditions. By integrating theoretical critique with literary analysis, the paper underscores the enduring relevance of postcolonial studies in addressing the complex entanglements of history, culture, and power in the twenty‑first century, while also identifying directions for future scholarship grounded in inclusivity, interdisciplinarity, and indigenous epistemologies.
