Educating Appetites: The Myth of Er

Abstract: This article offers a reason for why Plato ends the Republic with the myth of Er. I explore Plato's tripartite understanding of the soul and the dangers that emerge when appetites control reason and spiritedness. When this happens, habituation, force, and fear are left to restrain appetites. Within the category of fear, eschatological myths find a place.
