Report on the state of science in the Republic of Moldova in 2024 (Synthesis)

In accordance with the provisions of the legislative acts, during the XVII Session of the General Assembly of the ASM held on May 15, 2025, the ”Report on the State of Science in the Republic of Moldova in 2024” was presented by Academician Ion Tighineanu, President of the ASM, and approved by Decision of the General Assembly of the ASM No. XVII/1. The report presents data on scientific potential, staff training, levels of research funding, quantifiable scientific results, and visibility at both the national and international levels; integration into the international/ European research area; the implementation of projects in the fields of research and innovation; contributions of experts in their respective fields of competence, made through dialogue platforms and expert committees; scientific and innovative results; quality of research; the impact and implementation of the results obtained. It also includes a comprehensive analysis of the situation in the field of science, the reflection of developed policies, and their implementation. Based on this analysis, the challenges facing the scientific community were identified, and constructive recommendations and proposals were formulated. Seven years after the start of the profound reform of the research and innovation field (2017), an evaluation is required both at the central level and within research and innovation organizations – including among scientific researchers – in order to analyze the results of the reform and its positive and negative consequences, with the aim of identifying appropriate forward-looking measures. The recommendations proposed by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova will help ensure the necessary conditions for the sustainable development of science in the Republic of Moldova, which is on the path toward integration into the European research area and the European Union.
