The article substantiates the relevance of the problem of forming the educational motives of undergraduate and graduate students and challenges in modern conditions. Various aspects and dynamics of this process are revealed. The purpose of the article is to substantiate and reveal the formation of students' educational motives. The article is devoted to the practical problems of formation of educational motivation of students and postgraduates in the context of modernization of higher education. The article discusses the concepts of motivation of educational activity and educational motivation.The main research methods are the analysis of scientific literature devoted to the problem of the formation of educational motives of undergraduate and graduate students.In the context of the modernization of higher professional education, the problem of forming students' educational motivation is fundamental, and the methodological basis of the research is the general theory of activity, the theory of educational activity, the concept of a personality-oriented educational process and the concept of educational motivation.
