Leveraging Digital Governance for Sustainable Development in Sierra Leone: Strategies, Impacts, and Future Pathways

Sierra Leone, a West African nation striving for sustainable development, faces numerous socio-economic challenges, including high poverty rates, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to essential services. This paper explores the role of digital governance as a transformative tool for fostering sustainable development in Sierra Leone. By examining national digital strategies and the key components of digital infrastructure, the study highlights initiatives aimed at enhancing digital accessibility, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The impact of digital governance is assessed through its transformation of public service delivery, economic empowerment, and the enhancement of transparency and accountability within the government. Case studies illustrate significant improvements in sectors such as healthcare, education, and public administration, demonstrating the potential of digital platforms to drive efficiency and inclusivity. However, the implementation of digital governance is impeded by infrastructural limitations, low digital literacy, and cybersecurity risks. To address these barriers, the paper proposes strategic recommendations, including the integration of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain, capacity building, fostering public-private partnerships, and ensuring inclusive access to digital resources. These recommendations aim to scale digital governance initiatives, ensuring their sustainability and effectiveness in promoting equitable growth. The study concludes that leveraging digital governance is essential for Sierra Leone to overcome its developmental challenges and achieve long-term sustainable growth. Future research directions are suggested to further explore the long-term impacts and optimize digital governance strategies.
