Evaluación genotóxica de extractos de alcaloides de Lupinus exaltatus
Legumes are an important source of nutrients; species of the genus Lupinus have been cultivated for their alkaloids, proteins and as soil improvers. Their biological effects have been investigated, such as antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, central nervous system depressant, antiarrhythmic and hypoglycemic properties, including their insulin-secreting capacity. However, adverse effects have also been reported, such as intoxication after consumption of cooking water for medicinal purposes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the genotoxicity of Lupinus exaltatus extract using the micronucleus test in a murine model. A dose of 200 mg/kg was administered orally for 5 days. The results showed a significant increase in micronucleated erythrocytes (MNE) in the positive control (cyclophosphamide) from the second day of treatment. The group treated with 200 mg/kg of alkaloid extract also showed a significant increase in MNE compared to the negative control. No significant differences were observed in the evaluation of polychromatic erythrocytes (EPC) and EPCMN. These findings suggest that the extract at the dose used causes genotoxicity, but further studies with lower doses are required to confirm its effects.
