Infección Urinaria en Pacientes Hospitalizados con Indicación de Catéter Urinario en Hospital de Segundo Nivel
The use of urinary catheter is a common practice in hospital areas, being a risk factor for presenting bacteriuria and urinary tract infection. The objective was to identify the prevalence of urinary tract infection in hospitalized patients with a medical indication for a urinary catheter. This is an observational, retrospective, descriptive study. Records of patients hospitalized at the General Hospital of Zone No. 2 Apizaco, Tlaxcala in 2023, both sexes, of legal age, were included. The data analyzed were: age, sex, comorbidities, days of hospital stay, results of the general urine examination. Descriptive analysis was performed in addition to OR, Fisher's exact test and Mann Whitney U test. There were 293 records, 50.5% of patients under 60 years of age, 48.8% men. 24.9% (73) with indication for urinary catheter placement. 44 patients had urinary infection, 37 had indication for urinary catheter. A statistical difference was demonstrated with the presence of a urinary catheter, age and days of hospital stay (p <.05). Therefore, the insertion and care of the catheter must be supervised to reduce the risk.
