Leadership from a gender perspective in LSS service : A qualitative study

The aim of this study is to explore how employees perceive the gender perspective in leadership within an organization subject to the LSS Act. The study focuses on the impact of gender on employees’ perceptions of managerial leadership styles. The LSS sector is predominantly female-dominated within the fields of health and social care. Employing a qualitative methodology, this research critically examines existing literature and theoretical frameworks related to gender within the LSS context. Due to the paucity of prior studies specifically addressing gender in LSS, this study also draws upon broader research within health and social care. The findings indicate that female managers and leaders are commonly perceived as communicative, empathetic, understanding, and more affirming towards individuals. Nevertheless, women may be subject to misinterpretations rooted in stereotypical gender traits. Conversely, male managers and leaders tend to be perceived as more authoritarian and decisive. This study underscores the persistence of gender stereotyping in shaping employees’ perceptions of leadership.
