Laadullinen evolutionaarinen suunnittelu sosiaalista innovaatiota varten arkkitehtuurissa: Kvalitativ evolutionär design för social innovation inom arkitektur

Drawing inspiration from the concept of evolution in biology—where populations change and adapt over generations—evolutionary design applies similar principles to create and refine solutions in design. Just as species evolve traits for survival, evolutionary design enables architects to develop and optimize solutions that meet specific, often complex, criteria. While evolutionary design is rooted in biological ideas, applying these concepts to architecture presents challenges, largely due to the qualitative and subjective nature of the field. In 2023, students at Aalto University explored these ideas in a real-world setting. As part of the Urban Design and Planning Capstone Project, they tested a- qualitative evolutionary design method to produce socially innovative solutions for urban sites in Finland and the UK. Their results identified three key aspects where evolutionary design holds significant potential in architecture: building and block types, desired qualities, and site-specific features.
