Lightweight Blockchain Implementation for Secure IoMT Systems Using Hyperledger Iroha 2

With the increase of Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), devices have intro-duced new concerns related to data security. Traditional centralized securitymodels are ill-equip to handle the vulnerabilities prevalent in resource con-strained medical environments. This study investigates the feasibility of usingHyperledger Iroha 2, a lightweight, Rust-based permissioned blockchain asa secure backend for IoMT test environment. Deployment used RaspberryPi and laptop to emulate IoMT device behavior in a simulated resource con-tainerized environment. After structured penetration testing and network-layer attack simulations. These attacks include Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) spoofing, unautho-rized peer injection, and Synchronize (SYN) flooding. As a result severalvulnerabilities were identified in the Iroha 2 implementation. These includedinsecure peer-to-peer communication, lack of API-level access controls, andstatic key-based authentication without any rotation. The study further mea-sured transaction latency along with throughput while under load using Rust-based benchmarking client. The novelty of this research lies in being one of the first empirical securityevaluations of Hyperledger Iroha 2 in a simulated IoMT environment. Unlikeprevious works where the focus is on theoretical or high-level architecturereviews, this study hopes to provide a more practical and hands on insightsabout Iroha 2’s secure usability in a more realistic scenario. The vulnerabili-ties targeted aim to help evaluate how secure Iroha 2 blockchain can be whenintegrated into a IoMT infrastructure.
