Surgical Correction of Angular Limb Deformity: Anatomical Basis and Techniques

Angular limb deformities (ALDs) present a significant orthopedic challenge in veterinary medicine, arising from disruptions in normal bone growth during the developmental stages of growing dogs. These deformities, characterized by abnormal angulation or torsion of the limbs, profoundly affect weight-bearing bones like the radius-ulna, femur, or tibia, leading to lameness, chronic pain, and impaired mobility.

The etiology of ALD is multifaceted, often linked to congenital anomalies, traumatic injuries, or metabolic disorders that interfere with physeal growth. Addressing ALD is crucial due to its potential to precipitate secondary complications, including osteoarthritis, joint instability and compensatory musculoskeletal adaptations, which can severely diminish the quality of life in affected canine patients.
