Potential distribution of the invasive marine species Perna viridis (Asian green mussel) in Australia

Perna viridis (Asian green mussel) is native to the Indian and western Pacific Oceans where it is widely cultivated. It has become an invasive species in the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic coasts of the USA and Brazil. It has been detected on numerous vessels visiting Australia but so far has not become established here. An incursion of Asian green mussel has recently been detected in Weipa in Queensland. ABARES has been tasked with determining its maximum potential range in Australia as the first step in determining the length of coastline potentially affected for calculating jurisdictional cost-sharing proportions in preparation for a response under the National Environmental Biosecurity Response Agreement (NEBRA).
