The Origins of Yoruba Kingship and the Primacy of Ile-Ife in Precolonial Yoruba History
This paper examines the historical and cultural ties between Ile-Ife and Oyo within Yoruba civilization. It highlights that before the political rise of the Oyo Empire, Ile-Ife was regarded as the cradle of Yoruba civilization and the ultimate source of dynastic legitimacy. The study contends that no paramount Yoruba ruler emerged solely from Oyo; rather, all royal authority—including that of the Alaafin of Oyo was rooted in the genealogical and spiritual heritage of Ile-Ife. Drawing on historical traditions, royal titulature, and comparative analysis, the paper positions Ife as the spiritual heart of kingship, with Oyo representing the political and military projection of Ife’s legitimacy.
