Effect of Real Time Payments on Operational Efficiency and Risk Mitigation in Nigeria's Financial Sector

This study examined the effect of real-time payment systems on operational efficiency and risk mitigation within Nigeria’s financial sector, focusing on First Bank of Nigeria Limited, a licensed deposit money bank. A survey research design was employed, and data were gathered from a sample of 222 financial professionals using structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and frequency tables. Results showed that 67.5% of respondents rated the impact of real-time payments on transaction processing speed as high or very high, confirming enhanced operational efficiency. Similarly, 68.9% indicated that real-time systems were effective or very effective in fraud detection, while 69.8% agreed that they improved real-time risk monitoring. Moreover, 66.6% of respondents reported that their institution had either fully or mostly adopted the systems, and 68.4% noted moderate to great improvements in system performance and security. The study concludes that real-time payment infrastructure significantly improves both operational outcomes and risk control mechanisms. It recommends full-scale adoption, investment in fraud detection tools, and regulatory collaboration to standardize system implementation.
