Archaeological monitoring and recording at the Church of St Cyriac and Julitta, Newton St Cyres, Devon

A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Oakford Archaeology in May 2025 at the Church of St Cyriac and Julitta, Newton St Cyres, Devon. The works comprised the excavation of a single trench measuring roughly 45m in length, 0.7m wide and 0.8m deep. The work was required by the Diocese Advisory Committee (DAC), advised by the Diocesan Archaeological Advisor, Andy Crabb. The works exposed the remains of a large number of graves within the graveyard, including the remains of a possible vaulted grave at the western end of the works. In addition, the works has exposed evidence suggesting that the position of the church path immediately outside the west entrance to the tower has remained unchanged since at least the 15th century. A small finds assemblage was recovered from the excavations dating to the late 16th-20th century.
