Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence for Cloud- based Internet of Transportation Systems

The transportation sector is experiencing a major transformation driven by the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), especially through the integration of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs). These self-operating systems are enhancing critical tasks such as traffic management, logistics, and delivery operations. AVs extend beyond traditional vehicles to include aerial drones and maritime platforms, offering diverse and flexible use cases. When connected, these platforms form what is known as the Internet of Transportation Systems (IoTS)—a unified network that generates and transmits substantial amounts of sensor data. This data is typically processed in the cloud, facilitating informed and efficient decision-making. Despite their promising capabilities, IoTenabled transportation systems raise significant challenges in terms of data security and user privacy. Addressing these challenges is essential to ensuring the safe and trustworthy deployment of such technologies. Additionally, Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a central role in optimizing IoTS through automation, real-time data processing, and predictive analytics. This paper explores the integration of AI and cyber security in cloud-driven transportation ecosystems, highlighting both the advantages and the challenges that must be addressed for effective implementation.
