Online Education in the COVID-19 Era: A Study of Students' Challenges and Support From Educational Institutions

This study investigates the challenges faced by students at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly regarding the shift to online education. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing in-depth telephonic interviews with eight students. The findings reveal several issues, including limited access to technology, unreliable internet connectivity, lack of technical skills, unsupportive home environments, and mental fatigue from long online sessions. Additionally, students reported difficulties in time management, with the increased workload leading to stress and decreased engagement. The study also identifies a significant negative impact on socialization and personal growth, as online education lacked the interpersonal interactions that are a key component of on-campus learning. Despite these challenges, students adapted by developing coping strategies such as peer support, self-learning, and better time management. The research also highlights the supportive role of PIDE’s administration, which provided timely technical assistance and a well-structured Learning Management System (LMS). This study is framed using the Online Collaborative Learning (OCL) theory, emphasizing the importance of collaborative knowledge-building in virtual environments. The findings underscore the need for improved technological infrastructure, better teacher training, and mental health support to enhance online learning experiences in the future.
