Archaeological Monitoring and Recording of Land to the Rear of 51-52, High Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire

A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording had been required during the groundworks stage of development on this site. However, upon arrival at the site, the new build area of the proposed three new residential dwellings had already been reduced in level. Consequently, the archaeological watching brief was limited to a programme of detailed site recording and surface collection of any exposed surface finds. This archaeological watching brief recorded a modern topsoil horizon (from which exposed modern finds were recovered from, but were not retained) and an underlying buried soil horizon. A sample of surface finds were collected from the buried soil horizon, which included further finds of modern brick and tile fragments and five sherds of post-medieval to early modern pottery. No significant archaeological activity was identified. Further findings comprised an exposed modern soakaway and two modern brick wall foundations.
