Following pre-application advice regarding alterations to 5 Colliergate York, a series of structural investigations are taking place to inform design decisions. Two trial holes were handexcavated as part of this assessment. Trail Hole 7 was located within the building's original footprint, with Trial Hole 5 situated in the 18th century extension. The monitoring identified two made-ground contexts. One contained pottery sherds dating from the 13th to 15th centuries (4), while the other included pottery sherds from the 13th to 18th centuries (11). The Historic England list entry for 5 Colliergate suggest a construction date of the 16th century, with a later 18th century extension. The ceramic evidence recovered from these deposits aligns with these dates.
