PARAMETRIC STUDY ON SEISMIC RESPONSE OF ELEVATED WATER TANKS USING ETABS

Elevated water tanks are essential lifeline structures, particularly in urban and seismic-prone
regions. Their seismic performance is highly influenced by design parameters such as aspect ratio,
water volume, and staging height. This study investigates the effect of these parameters on the seismic
behaviour of elevated water tanks using finite element modelling in ETABS software. A total of nine
different models were developed by systematically varying the aspect ratio, liquid volume, and staging
height. Key seismic responses including base shear, base moment, lateral stiffness, and time period
were analysed as per IS 1893-2002 (Part 2 – Draft) and IITK-GSDMA guidelines. The results indicate
that increasing aspect ratio and staging height lead to higher seismic forces and lower lateral stiffness,
whereas increasing water volume significantly affects base reactions. The study highlights critical
design considerations to improve structural resilience and ensure the safety of elevated water tanks in
earthquake-prone zones.

Abstract

Elevated water tanks are essential lifeline structures, particularly in urban and seismic-prone
regions. This study investigates the effect of these parameters on the seismic
behaviour of elevated water tanks using finite element modelling in ETABS software.
