A Strategy for Implementing Environmentally-Friendly Green Technologies
The use of technology plays a vital role in the state of the environment. The fate of the planet is a critical concern for governments, organisations and individuals. Environmental issues dominate the political agenda on a global scale. Technology has a key role to play in this situation. The creation, implementation and use of technologies have caused global problems with pollution, damage and destruction of the environment, including a wide range of life forms, over time. A strong movement to halt this trend, repair the damage and improve the situation has arisen from respect for our planet and a desire to preserve life, including human life. The development and usage of technology can be changed to support the environment, thus reversing the trend of exploiting, destroying and polluting it. This paper considers how technology can aid environmental issues, via organisational and governmental action. The increased utilisation of Green Technologies that are ‘friendly’ to the environment is the objective. The premise is that current practices need to change as they are not sustainable, in that they will cause irreparable damage to life and the planet. Several interviews were held with a leading practitioner, who is a subject matter expert in this area in the role of Director of a ‘Green’ Energy company. Qualitative methods were utilised in the empirical research, employing semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis of the data, including a literature review of the principal journals. Recommendations were produced for organisations and governments, to assist in utilising technology to improve the environment and implement sustainable practices in this sphere. The construction of a Green Technology Strategy is, therefore, proposed to provide suggested key activities to help adopt robust, sustainable technological practices that assist the environment.
