The Relationship Between Imperial and National Identity in Contemporary Türkiye - Survey Study
The aim of this research is to examine the extent to which elements of the historical “imperial” (Ottoman) identity and the modern “national” identity are present in the self-perception of Türkiye’s population today, and how these relate to patterns of social stratification and cultural orientation. In the early 20th century, following the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye, the emphasis of social identity shifted significantly. This study investigates how these historical layers persist in present-day Türkiye, particularly in the context of globalization. Methodology: An online questionnaire will be distributed using the snowball sampling method. The survey will be anonymous and targeted at residents of Türkiye. The planned sample size is at least 1,000 respondents, representing diverse age groups, genders, educational backgrounds, and regions. Research Questions: • What layers of identity (national, religious, ethnic, regional) appear in respondents’ self-definitions? • To what extent do people feel a cultural connection to the historical Ottoman heritage? • How does social background and family origin influence identity formation? • How visible is the impact of globalization on cultural orientation? Ethical Considerations: The study will not collect personally identifiable information. All responses will be processed anonymously and used solely for academic purposes.
