Impact of Real Sector on the Economic Development of Nigeria: Perception Approach

The study examines the impact of the real sector on Nigeria’s economic development, employing a perception-based, descriptive survey approach. Data were collected through questionnaires to understand current conditions and the relationships among key economic sectors. Findings highlight agriculture as a foundational sector that supports livelihoods and food security. However, to enhance productivity and rural incomes, the sector requires modernisation, better infrastructure, and improved market access. The manufacturing sector, despite challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and unstable policies, is viewed as a driver of economic transformation through value addition, import substitution, job creation, and industrial growth. The services sector, particularly in finance, telecommunications, and digital technologies, has experienced rapid growth, fostering entrepreneurship, enhancing access to services, and contributing to economic diversification. Mining and construction also significantly contribute to economic development by providing employment opportunities, infrastructure, and foreign exchange earnings. The study emphasises the need for sustainable resource management and infrastructure investment to optimise the benefits of these sectors while ensuring environmental protection. Ultimately, the study recommends strategic economic diversification policies to reduce Nigeria's overreliance on oil and promote the growth of the agriculture, manufacturing, services, mining, and tourism sectors for sustainable economic development.
