Nutritional Significance of seaweed phlorotannins

Polyphenols, which are bioactive substances produced through acetate malonate pathway are present in significant amounts in brown algae. The phloroglucinol based polymers can be classified into different categories based on their bonding patterns and display a wide variety of structural complexities. Their hydroxyl rich aromatic structure enables them to have strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. Phlorotannins can modulate enzymes linked to glucose lipid metabolism, while also inhibiting the pro-inflammatory pathways and carrying out the neutralisation of reactive oxygen species. Their ability to provide neuroprotection and enhance cardiovascular health makes them promising ingredients in functional foods and nutraceuticals.
