Environmental and Sustainability education: Nordic Perspectives

Based on a review of Nordic research literature on environmental and sustainability education (ESE), this article discusses the understandings of sustainability and the purposes of ESE that characterize the research field, as well as the knowledge content and educational approaches that are in focus. The article concludes with a discussion of analytical insights concerning promising developments, possible gaps and challenges in Nordic ESE research, and potential tensions in the encounter between different understandings of the role of education in Nordic ESE research and in Nordic sustainability policies.
