Pioneering innovations in biodegradable packaging for meat products: Exploring intelligent pH indicator films
Packaging plays a crucial role in maintaining the quality, enhancing the shelf life, and ensuring the safety of meat products. In recent years, the increasing awareness of environmental issues and the need for greater sustainability have spurred a strong desire to replace conventional plastics with biodegradable biopolymers. These materials, derived from natural sources, not only help mitigate plastic waste but also facilitate the incorporation of bioactive compounds, leading to the development of active packaging solutions with enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Furthermore, the use of biodegradable biopolymers is instrumental in reducing food waste by prolonging the freshness of meat products. They achieve this by effectively controlling the permeability of gases, thus regulating the internal atmosphere within the packaging, and maintaining optimal humidity levels. This not only enhances the stability of meat products but also contributes to food safety. The aim of this article is to thoroughly examine the characteristics of various packaging methods, detailing the properties and advantages of each within the meat and meat product industry. By providing insights into innovative packaging solutions, this article highlights the potential of biodegradable materials in fostering a more sustainable approach to food preservation. • The article examines the shift from conventional plastics to biodegradable biopolymers.
