Hashtag, Hope and the Heat of Dissent: Gen Z and the New Wave of Political Activism in South Asia
This essay explores the online trappings of a new, formidable age of youth activism in South Asia. Against a backdrop of tumultuous interstate relations, convoluted post-colonial legacies, and erosion of democratic values, Gen Z has emerged as a potent socio-political force to be reckoned with. This essay engages in a critical appraisal of the power wielded by online platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube in actively shaping and moulding contemporary political rhetoric. It interrogates the double-edged nature of digital engagement, thereby outlining the negative ramifications of online polarisation and its effect on impressionable minds. It elucidates the role of social media engagement in fostering a “bottomup democracy” characterized by the proliferation of hashtags, memes & reels and the seductive allure of the influencer culture. Through case studies from India, Bangladesh, and beyond, the essay grapples with the fragile balance between necessary state surveillance for the protection of youth against criminal & terrorist exploitation, ideological polarisation, and the preservation of freedom of speech and expression. It also foregrounds the emancipatory potential of online platforms by reposing considerable agency in the ostracised and repressed voices, particularly women and rural youth. It highlights the fragile yet potent ammunition held by this new generation of leaders and activists, one that has unprecedented power to reshape political discourses in South Asia. This new contemporary development entails critical engagement, questions of ethics, and region-wide democratic safeguards.
