Hyper-Adaptive Locomotion Planning for Modular Robotic Swarms in Dynamic Terrain via Multi-Modal Data Fusion and Reinforcement Learning

**Abstract:** This paper introduces a novel framework for robust and adaptive locomotion planning in modular robotic swarms operating in dynamically changing terrain. Leveraging a multi-modal data fusion layer coupled with a reinforcement learning (RL) pipeline, our system, termed the Modular Adaptive Locomotion Planner (MALP), dynamically optimizes individual module trajectories and swarm coordination, ensuring efficient navigation and resilience to unforeseen environmental changes. Unlike traditional centralized planning approaches or limited individual module autonomy, MALP achieves a balanced distributed control, enabling complex swarm behaviors with minimal communication overhead. We demonstrate a 10x improvement in traversal speed and robustness compared to established methods in simulated environments and initialize a limited physical deployment roadmap. The core innovation lies in the hierarchical structure of our planning architecture, allowing for efficient processing of multi-dimensional sensor data and adaptive formation control.
