Sistematización de Investigaciones sobre la Cañahua en la Facultad de Agronomía de la Universidad Mayor de San Andrés
The cañahua (Chenopodium pallidicaule) is a high-Andean crop of great nutritional value, positioned as a key alternative for ensuring food security in the current context of the climate crisis. Despite its potential, studies on this crop are limited and primarily focused on traditional production regions. This document aims to systematize studies conducted on cañahua between 2005 and 2024 by the Faculty of Agronomy at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA). The methodology involved collecting and systematizing studies from UMSA's repository using the keyword Chenopodium pallidicaule. A database was created to record the title, authors, year of publication, geographic location, and a summary of the findings for each study. These studies were categorized into three thematic axes: research, transformation/value addition, and local knowledge. The results indicate that only 42 studies were conducted, with 66% addressing research topics such as fertility, agronomic performance, and germplasm management; 19% focusing on value addition, including flour and beverage production; and 14% related to local knowledge through participatory approaches. Most studies were conducted in the Northern Altiplano, covering over 20 municipalities. Key findings highlight cañahua's adaptability to adverse environmental conditions, genetic diversity, and the use of organic fertilizers to enhance yield. Its high nutritional value reaffirms its role as a key crop for food security. Future recommendations include fostering genetic improvement studies, developing innovative high-value products, and implementing public policies to support family production and preserve ancestral knowledge.
