Mecanismos para la conservación del medio ambiente por posibles afectaciones de obras en construcción ubicadas en la ciudad de Quibdó, Chocó
Chocó is the only department in Colombia with a coastline on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Quibdó, its capital, is located on the right bank of the Atrato River, where several streams, such as La Yesca and El Caraño, flow through the city. Additionally, in certain urban areas, there are canals that flow into the Atrato River and some streams. However, these water sources, as well as public roads, lots, parking lots, and other spaces, are used to dump Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW), such as concrete chunks, bricks, PVC sheets, and other materials generated by the execution of concrete works. This waste causes various negative impacts on the environment and human health, such as illness, alterations, and deterioration, among others. Although there are regulations designed to mitigate these impacts, they are not applied to these projects, and the competent authorities do not exercise adequate control or oversight over construction processes. This has led some contractors to dispose of CDW in locations prohibited by current regulations. This situation prompted the investigation and identification of projects that generate negative impacts on the environment, with the aim of establishing guidelines contained in an environmental management plan for construction and demolition waste. This plan seeks to ensure that contractors implement all necessary actions to mitigate, to a certain extent, the generation and improper disposal of CDW, thus contributing to preventing negative impacts on both the environment and human health.
