What Factors Influence Continued Participation in Floorball Among Teenagers Aged 15 to 16? – A Quantitative Study

In collaboration with Linköping Floorball, hereafter referred to as Linköping innebandy, this study examines why young people continues playing floorball at the ages of 15-16. The club has identified these ages as critical, where a significant number of adolescents leave the sport. This trend is not unique to the club; similar findings have been reported in broader studies, such as by Norberg's 2019 report to the state (Norberg, 2019). Rather than focusing on the negative aspects on why young people quit, this study aims at a positive approach by exploring why those who do not quit continues to play. This perspective is chosen because it is easier to engage with those still active in the sport. Adolescents at this age, face various influencing factors, including high school choices, puberty, and sports specialization. The club seeks to retain as many members as possible, as this increases their capital and competitiveness, both within floorball and against other sports. Understanding why young people continues to play is crucial for promoting long- term sports participation, fostering a positive sports environment, and reaping health benefits. The insights gained from this study will help Linköping innebandy in developing strategies to enhance their youth programs and retain more young members. These strategies may include creating engaging training programs, improving coach communication, and organizing social activities to strengthen the sense of community. This research not only benefits Linköping innebandy but also provides valuable insights for other sports organizations aiming to retain their youth members.
