Видавнича та промоційна діяльність буковинського товариства «Руська Рада»: (на матеріалах газет «Буковина» та «Народний Голос»)

The second half of the 19th and the early 20th centuries were characterised by the intensification of national and cultural movements in Bukovyna. For the Ukrainian nation, this period was also marked by an internal struggle for its future development in the moscophile or national direction. It was a conflict that influenced virtually all societies of that time, including “Ruska Besida,” “Ruska Rada,” “Soyuz” “Ruska Shkola” (“Ukraiinska Shkola”), etc. Changes for the better began only when representatives of the nation basis took over the leadership of these organisations. Their tasks and priorities ranged from educational and awareness-raising activity to political one, as well as from grounding their own periodicals to creating a network of public schools, libraries and reading rooms. In the aspect of such diverse initiatives, it was natural that they would begin publishing Ukrainian-language books of their own. The publishing heritage of this period still remains largely understudied. Only a few studies provide a comprehensive analysis of the multinational press. It is worth to note that as for the Ukrainian publishing, there are some book-length articles in the early 20th century, the Soviet epoch and the years of independence. However, scientists have often analysed it primarily from historical or literary perspectives, paying little attention to their publishing aspects as such. The article studies the publishing and promotional activities of the Ukrainian political society “Ruska Rada”. It outlines the main directions of the society’s publishing interests, works out its own book projects and series, and provides a detailed description of advertising and promotional materials published in the pages of “Narodnyi Holos” and “Bukovyna”. Particular attention is paid to the prerequisites for establishing the society’s own printing house, its cooperation with various societies and publishers of that time, as well as a statistical overview of the printed books. The source base of this research includes archival materials, periodicals, memoirs of participants in the national movements, works of scientists of the past and modern researchers of the history of Bukovyna press and publishing in total.
