Utilização de extratos e óleos essenciais como possibilidade no tratamento de mastite bovina ocasionada por Staphylococcus aureus

Mastitis is a common disease in dairy herds, characterized mainly by inflammatory changes in the mammary glands, which can lead to loss of milk quality and, if left untreated, to the loss of the mammary quarter or, in more severe cases, to the loss of the affected animal. The economic losses are many, in addition to the risks associated with human health, either due to the consumption of contaminated milk or the consumption of milk with traces of antibiotics used to treat the infection. Studies with compounds of natural origin have been increasing in recent years, aiming, in particular, to seek alternatives to established treatments in the hope of overcoming bacterial multidrug resistance. The objective of this study was to survey the possibilities of treating bovine mastitis through natural compounds such as extracts and essential oils, and their efficiency against one of the main pathogens that causes bovine mastitis: Staphylococcus aureus. A range of treatment possibilities was identified, but thefinal stages of production of new drugs and/or consolidated therapies for the treatment of mastitis are still lacking.
