A Utopian Exercise: On Utopian Thinking for Architects From Theory to Design
This thesis project explores Utopian thinking as a method for reflection and analysis for architects. In a time of crises and unsatisfactory compromise, where choices increasingly seem to revolve around finding the option which is “Least Bad“, this project seeks to explore what we actually want. The project should be read as an open-ended multi-medial essay, going back and forth between text, drawings, digital visualization and painting to answer the question: "How can utopia be used in architecture to reveal the desires of our hearts and minds, and how might this knowledge be of use for architects in face of contemporary societal challenges?" A fictional design based on subjective desire is created. The outcome is a school of architecture centered around reciprocal ecologies on an obsolete highway exit called "Spökavfarten" in Stockholm.
