Uptake of water across the depth of CLT and Glulam using Computed Tomography for analysis

In modern society, there is a necessary push for the use of more bio-based materials in construction. Timber and engineered wood products (EWP) are therefore rising in popularity. As new products make it onto the market it is important to understand the problems that come with them and find solutions as well as ensure adequate regulations around them. Products like CLT and Glulam have inherent complexity with layers and glue. Furthermore, the durability of all wood products is important to consider as wood is susceptible to damage related to changes in relative humidity. For these reasons, it is of interest to study the absorption of water in products like CLT and Glulam. This study aimed to bridge the gap in knowledge around water’s interactions with complex layered EWPs using computed tomography scanning technologies. The objectives were to determine if layer thickness affects water absorption, if glue impacts absorption, and if there was a difference in absorption between different glue types. This study found no difference in layer thickness while glue type seemed to have an impact on how the moisture is absorbed. PU glue may have caused a buildup in moisture near the glue line. Though more studies should be done to clarify the impact of the natural variance between layers.
