Vulnerable areas of Valencia’s historic centre to urban island effects

Vulnerable areas of Valencia’s historic centre to urban island effects The historic center of Valencia, like many urban areas, faces increasing challenges due to climate change, particularly in terms of rising temperatures and the intensification of the urban heat island (UHI) effect. This study aims to identify and analyse the most vulnerable areas within Valencia’s historic center, focusing on how climate change and UHI effects disproportionately affect these zones. Using Land Surface Temperature (LST) data derived from satellite imagery, the spatial distribution of temperature variations will be assessed, highlighting hotspots that are particularly sensitive to heat exposure. This approach not only helps pinpoint critical areas needing adaptation but also provides valuable insights for heritage preservation strategies on historical buildings. The results will contribute to the development of more sustainable urban environments that are resilient to both climate change and extreme heat events.
