Trabajo doméstico y de cuidados, ¿cuánto tiempo le dedican los varones mexicanos?
Men's participation in domestic and care work has been a central topic in gender studies due to the persistent inequality in the distribution of these tasks between men and women. Various studies have documented that, despite advances in gender equality, women continue to spend significantly more time on such activities, impacting their free time, professional development, and overall well-being. This article examines the participation of Mexican men in domestic and care work, with a particular focus on the changes that occurred during the COVID-19 lockdown. Using data from a sample of 399 cisgender men, collected through an online survey coordinated by Equimundo, the study explored the time dedicated to various activities related to household care, self-care, and community support. Results show that some demographic groups of men, such as younger men and those not living with a partner, increased their participation in specific tasks, like logistical planning and meal preparation. However, these changes are not widespread across the male population, and the gender gap remains significant, especially in more routine household chores. Additionally, men with children or those not living with a partner tend to be more involved in certain caregiving activities, such as educational support and family accompaniment. In contrast to women, who took on a greater share of both care and household work during the COVID-19 lockdown, men's involvement increased to a lesser extent and in more specific activities, highlighting the persistent inequality in the distribution of these responsibilities.
