Sustainable Manufacturing – Integrating Process Optimization and Circular Economy Strategies : A Literature Review
Sustainable manufacturing is essential in minimizing industrial environmental footprint while retaining economic profitability. This review of literature in the thesis examines the synergy between process optimization and circular economy (CE) practices to maximize manufacturing sustainability. The study addresses two key research questions: (1) How can manufacturing processes be optimized to minimize resource consumption and waste without compromising product quality and efficiency? and (2) What strategies improve CE adoptions such as recycling, remanufacturing, and reuse—to reduce environmental impact? The review incorporates about 60 academic literature sources, including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and highly reputed reports. The findings reveal that advanced process optimization techniques, including lean and green manufacturing, Six Sigma, energy-efficient technologies, and digital tools like AI and IoT maintain efficiency at a high level while reducing waste and materials consumed. For Circular Economy (CE), effective strategies are designed for disassembly, closed-loop supply chains, and industrial symbiosis, which optimize material recovery and extend product lifecycles. However, challenges such as high initial costs, technological barriers, and regulatory loopholes deter mass adoption. The study concludes that the combination of process optimization with Circular Economy (CE) principles provides a holistic route to sustainable manufacturing, reconciling economic and environmental goals. Practitioners can use these results to apply scalable, eco-efficient production processes, while policymakers can use them to develop enablers. The study is a contribution to academic literature in that it synthesizes existing knowledge and outlines future research streams, equipping industry stakeholders with efficient methods to transition to sustainable manufacturing.
