Sjuksköterskos erfarenheter av språkbarriär i mötet med patienter : En allmän litteraturöversikt
Background: Patients describe that language barriers can clearly contribute to a poorer quality of care and cause difficulties in understanding information and conveying their wishes. Relatives often have to act as interpreters for the patient in care contexts where there is a language barrier and describe both positive and negative aspects. Interpreters feel a responsibility ensure that there are no misunderstandings in the conversation. Purpose: To create an overview of nurses' experiences of meeting patients with a language barrier. Method: General literature review. Eleven qualitative articles and two quantitative articles are included in the results after analysis. Results: The majority of nurses felt that the language barrier reduced the quality of care, made work more difficult and contributed to negative feelings. Some nurses appreciated being challenged to find solutions to provide person-centered care. Using an interpreter and finding different strategies for effective communication was central to nurses creating the conditions to provide person-centered and safe care. Conclusion: Limitations were discovered in nurses' conditions to meet patients with a language barrier. Clearer support and increased access to resources for nurses who meet patients with a language barrier are needed to create adequate conditions for nurses to give good and patient-safe care.
