The purpose of the following study is to examine the infant mortality in parts of Småland and Skåne county in three different intervals 1860-1869, 1900-1909 and 1940-1949. The empirical data has been taken from the Swedish national archives. The main empirical question is to examine the development of infant mortality in cities and on the countryside, but also whether mortality was higher among children born out of wedlock. The results of the empirical data shows that the infant mortality rate dropped between 1860-1949 in both cities and in the rural areas. Mortality was also higher among the children born out of wedlock.
